Created during the 1960s, Sleigh Hauling Logs represents one of Maud Lewis's most frequently requested serial motifs—a composition she revisited across three decades that documents the essential winter economy of Maritime Canada. The painting depicts a pair of yoked oxen, their harnesses adorned with ornate bells and decorative tack, pulling a laden timber sledge across snow-covered terrain. This is working folk art: a reverent record of the seasonal rhythm that sustained Nova Scotia's lumber communities when frozen ground transformed impassable forests into viable logging operations.
Lewis painted this subject from memory and imagination, drawing equally from childhood recollections of her father's blacksmith shop in Yarmouth—where harnesses and ox equipment were crafted—and from popular print representations of Nova Scotia that circulated widely. The ox teams were integral to agricultural and forestry development throughout the Maritimes, representing not merely labour but the skilled partnership between teamster and animal that built Atlantic Canada's timber heritage.
Her father, John Dowley, operated a harness-making business, and Lewis grew up surrounded by the leather tackle, bells, and iron fittings that adorned working animals. This intimate knowledge surfaces in her meticulous attention to the decorative elements—the colourful halters, the ceremonial bells—that transform functional equipment into folk art ornamentation. She renders utilitarian labour with genuine affection, celebrating the strength, reliability, and mutual trust between humans and draught animals.
The oxen series is among the few serial images spanning three decades of Lewis's practice, testament to sustained customer demand and the subject's cultural resonance. Each version varies slightly—different landscape configurations, alternative colour schemes, occasional humorous touches (famously, some paintings feature three-legged oxen). Lewis worked on beaverboard and Masonite obtained from local lumber suppliers, sometimes painting so rapidly to fulfil orders that fingerprints remain visible on edges.
In interiors, this work functions as historical documentation rendered with genuine warmth. The composition's graphic directness and saturated palette suit spaces that value cultural authenticity, regional heritage, and narratives of skilled labour. Unlike purely decorative folk art, these paintings carry documentary weight—they preserve vanishing lifeways with sincerity rather than nostalgia.
